Frequently Asked Questions

Why should you work with Gary at Woodfish?

↠ Working with Gary Demers at Woodfish is more than just commissioning a piece; it’s about creating something unique that reflects the heart of Martha’s Vineyard. With deep roots on the island, Gary draws inspiration from his love for the ocean and the natural world, weaving that passion into every carving. Whether you're looking for a personalized sign, a fish carving, or custom furniture, Gary brings the same dedication and craftsmanship to every project, big or small. No matter where you are, he works closely with each client, ensuring your vision is brought to life with care and attention. His work is not just about the finished piece—it’s about the journey, the story, and the connection to something truly one-of-a-kind.

What kind of wood do you use for your carvings?

↠ I mostly work with butternut, a softwood that’s lightweight and easy to carve, with a beautiful weathered look. I also use walnut, oak, and occasionally reclaimed wood from shipwrecks or old barns.

Do you take custom commissions?

↠ Absolutely! Custom pieces are at the heart of what I do. Whether it's a personalized sign, restoring an old family heirloom, or creating a brand-new design, I’m excited to collaborate with you to bring something meaningful to life.

Can I visit your workshop?

↠ Yes! My workshop is open Monday to Friday, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or by appointment. Feel free to stop by, say hello, and see where the magic happens!

How long does it take to complete a carving?

↠ It depends on the complexity of the piece. Smaller projects typically take a few weeks, while larger, more intricate pieces may take several months. I’ll keep you updated and informed throughout the entire process!

Do you offer shipping for your pieces?

↠ Yes! I can ship locally or nationwide. We’ll determine the best shipping method based on the size and fragility of your piece.
